Absolute Beginner's Guide to Security, Spam, Spyware & Viruses Review

I checked the book out of the library to give me something to read on a trip, and liked it so much, I purchased it when I returned. It includes step by step instructions for the beginner, but as you get further into the book, some of the details may scare away new computer users. Working on computers for 20+ years, I figured it would be a good review, but I learned a lot.

Understanding Broadband over Power Line Review

Understanding Broadband over Power Line
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Among all the leading technologies to provide broadband services to the end users, broadband over power line (BPL) is definitely one of the most promising and challenging choices. Though the technology is not fully mature yet its advantages are obvious that users can use the exisitng electrical power line so no extra wire or network installation is necessary.
This book describes the BPL technology, equipment vendors, standard bodies and the future challenges in plain English terms. My major concern is this book does not provide enough details so the readers need to explore more from other resources in order to gain deeper understanding of this interesting subject. On the other hand, the content is a good resource to get basic knowledge in this area. For instances, table 3.3 on page 63 is informative for the readers to get an overview of the IEEE 802.11a OFDM modulation methods; and table 8.1 on page 173 provides the BOL average cost per subscriber for economics concern. I recommend this book as a good introductory fundation for anyone who wants to get a basic understanding of what is broadband over the power line.

Presenting the fundamentals of cooperative communications and networking, this book treats the concepts of space, time, frequency diversity and MIMO, with a holistic approach to principal topics where significant improvements can be obtained. Beginning with background and MIMO systems, Part I includes a review of basic principles of wireless communications and space-time diversity and coding. Part II then presents topics on physical layer cooperative communications such as relay channels and protocols, performance bounds, multi-node cooperation, and energy efficiency. Finally, Part III focuses on cooperative networking including cooperative and content-aware multiple access, distributed routing, source-channel coding, and cooperative OFDM. Including end-of-chapter review questions, this text will appeal to graduate students of electrical engineering and is an ideal textbook for advanced courses on wireless communications. It will also be of great interest to practitioners in the wireless communications industry. Presentation slides for each chapter and instructor-only solutions are available at www.cambridge.org/9780521895132.

MIMO: From Theory to Implementation Review

MIMO: From Theory to Implementation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is not clear from the book description, but this book is certainly not for the beginner in the field of MIMO. It assumes a strong background in DSP, mathematics, and basic understanding of MIMO. In other words, this is an industry book for experts. The book does a great job of covering the basics of MIMO, delving into the advantages of the encoding technique and its evolution over the years. Common MIMO measurements and challenges are discussed thoroughly, and one seeking additional enlightenment can find a huge index of papers and books to which he can refer for further information.
The authors also discuss very specific implementation challenges in addition to the theory, including 802.11N, LTE, and WiMax.
If you are in the industry and want a single book with just about everything you need to know on today's challenges in WiMax, I highly recommend this book. If you are just curious or new, you might want to look elsewhere.

Foreword from Arogyaswami Paulraj, Professor (Emeritus), Stanford University (USA)

* The first book to show how MIMO principles can be implemented in today's mobile broadband networks and components

* Explains and solves some of the practical difficulties that arise in designing and implementing MIMO systems.

* Both theory and implementation sections are written in the context of the most recent standards: IEEE 802.11n (WiFi); IEEE 802.16 (WIMAX); 4G networks (3GPP/3GPP2, LTE).

This book covers the very current and the upcoming future mobile communication technologies, incorporating the fundamental aspects of these technologies for understanding of technical intricacies as well as their industrial implementation. The book carefully explains the scientific aspects, coupled with an in depth look into technical management of the implementation of these technologies as complete end to end networks. Thus the author presents the complete mobile communication network system, from end user to the core, of various current & future technologies with a key focus on technically managing the network system, managing current technologies, technical strategy planning and road mapping.
As part of the present day ever-evolving mobile communication industry, I have found the book highly relevant and useful especially in understanding the overall technical management of new technology communication systems and how important it is, but is often neglected by industry professionals. The author explains how important effective integration of technology management into the communication network is, for a successful mobile communication business.
This book will also prove a good reference for academia as it clearly and completely layouts the mobile communication network systems, easy to comprehend for students who have not yet entered into the industry.

Taking an in-depth look at the mobile communications ecosystem, this book covers the two key components, i.e., Network and End-User Devices, in detail. Within the network, the sub components of radio access network, transmission network, core networks, services and OSS are discussed; component level discussion also features antenna diversity and interference cancellation techniques for smart wireless devices.

The role of various standard development organizations and industry forums is highlighted throughout. The ecosystem is strengthened with the addition of the Technology Management (TM) component dealing mostly with the non-technical aspects of the underlying mobile communications industry. Various aspects of TM including technology development, innovation management, knowledge management and more are also presented.

Focuses on OFDM-based radio technologies such as LTE & WiMAX as well as MBWA (Mobile Broadband Wireless Access)
Provides a vital addition to the momentum of EVDO and its migration towards LTE
Emphasis on radio, core, operation, architectural and performance aspects of two next generation technologies - EPS and WiMAX
Includes discussion of backhaul technologies and alternatives as well as issues faced by operators switching to 3G and Next Generation Mobile Networks
Cutting-edge research on emerging Gigabit Ethernet Microwave Radios and Carrier Ethernet transport technologies

Next Generation Mobile Communications Ecosystem serves as a practical reference for telecom associated academia and industry to understanding mobile communications in a holistic manner, as well as assisting in preparing graduate students and fresh graduates for the marketplace by providing them with information not only on state-of-the-art technologies and standards but also on TM. By effectively focusing on the key domains of TM this book will further assist companies with improving their competitiveness in the long run. Importantly, it will provide students, engineers, researchers, technology managers and executives with extensive details on various emerging mobile wireless standards and technologies.

J2ME in a Nutshell (O'Reilly Java) Review

J2ME in a Nutshell (O'Reilly Java)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
J2ME in a Nutshell is exactly that. Coming in at 432 pages, this book packs of lot of information into not a lot of space. It is probably not the best book on the market for learning J2ME, but there is so much information in here that it is worth reading, even if it is your first J2ME book. The book is fairly complete, although it does have limited CDC information, as most CDC profiles were still in the JCP at the time of writing. Still, there is a great deal of valuable information in the book, and it will serve quite well as a desktop reference.
The book is organized well, leading the user through the CLDC, and the most popular CLDC profile, MIDP. I particularly appreciate the way MIDP has been separated into various parts, making it easier to find the specific information I want. In addition, I also liked the extra sections dealing with J2ME specific tools, and how to load J2ME applications onto Palm OS, something many other books fail to deal with.
In all, this book may not be the only J2ME book I need, but it will doubtless be one that I refer to repeatedly as I develop with this platform.
