For a book with programming in the title there is precious little programming in this book...
The editorial review from Book News, Inc has it right: this is a general MIDP information book. If you are after a book about how to program some MIDP specific features you will not find it here. Contrary to the other reader's review there is actually little low level technical information.
No treatment on general programming tips either, for example, why threads are more important in MIDP wireless programming than traditional Java programming. Or how to change your style to be less Object Orientated for speed and memory efficiency (Nokia forum has good tips on these areas).
In short, good review but bad for programming.

Wireless Networking with Microsoft Windows Vista Review

Wireless Networking with Microsoft Windows Vista
Average Reviews:

Written for a beginner to wireless networks and Vista, this is good. The book covers the basics on how to plan and deploy a wireless network. You could get a system up and running with the book's advice.
That being said, the chapter on security is light. I wanted information on the various types of encryption, and what steps I must take to secure the network. Not much there.

Networking has become commonplace in the home. In years past, it took a trained technician to set up and manage a computer network; that's not the case anymore. With more and more households having multiple PCs, there is an increased demand to network those PCs to share files, peripherals, and an Internet connection. And it's become much easier to create a home network, thanks to easier-to-use wireless networking technologies and equipment. The problem is setting up a wireless network can still be somewhat confusing, and often difficult. Even setting up a simple wireless network to share an Internet connection can be a frustrating trial-and-error process. What kind of wireless network should you choose -- 802.11a, b, g, or n? What equipment do you need? How do you configure all your computers to work on the network? How do you share a single printer on your network? The confusion continues when one considers the different issues related to different operating systems. Setting up a wireless network under Windows Vista is much different than setting up a similar network under Windows XP. Users are looking for simple answers to all these questions. Unfortunately, most networking books today are geared toward technology-savvy networking professionals. Where does the average user turn to for solutions to his wireless networking problems? The answer is this book -- Wireless Networking with Windows Vista. Essentials of UMTS (The Cambridge Wireless Essentials Series) Review

Essentials of UMTS (The Cambridge Wireless Essentials Series)
Average Reviews:

I have already read quite a few of the UMTS/WCDMA books on the market. This books does a superb job presenting the essential concepts of UMTS, without relying on complex equations to convey the information. The author is able to boil-up the technical details into very concise ideas, and express them clearly. There are plenty of diagrams and tables that help to illustrate the concepts.
Having already been knowledgeable about UMTS, I thought the book hit each important area with clarity: system architecture, protocol stack, air interface, signaling procedures, and services. While it does help to already be familiar with cellular communications, this book is an excellent place to start if you are new to UMTS. It's also a great high level overview for managers.

The third generation (3G) cellular system UMTS is advanced, optimised and complex. The many existing books on UMTS attempt to explain all the intricacies of the system and as a result are large and equally complex. This book takes a different approach and explains UMTS in a concise, clear and readily understandable style. Written by a professional technical trainer, and based on training courses delivered on UMTS to telecommunication companies worldwide, Essentials of UMTS will enable you to grasp the key concepts quickly. It assumes no previous knowledge of mobile telecommunication theory, and is structured around the operation of the system, clearly setting out how the different components interact with each other, and how the system as a whole behaves. Engineers, project managers and marketing executives working for equipment manufacturers and network operators will find this concise guide to UMTS invaluable.

Of the 230 pages of this book, including glossary, there are 2 useful pages. It is full of typos (on 2 pages they refer to "H-REAP" as "H-LEAP", "H-HEAP" and "H-REAP"). Most of the info is completely not relivant to Wireless at all, much less a CCIE level. Not only is there no information above CCNA: Wireless study, there is a good chunk that is just plain old wrong and more that just have nothing to do with Wireless; heck, about 20% doesn't have anything to do with Networking. Though the title of the book claims to aid you in passing the CCIE: Wireless the first time, it will more than likely do the reverse of being helpful for the Writen and worse for the Lab. Should you clear either portion the first time it will be because of a myriad of reasons, none of which are this book. I know there aren't alot of resources out there to turn to for studying for your CCIE: Wireless, which is what has lead some of us to this book, but you will be much better served by saving your cash and, more importantly, the valuable time youhave to study. Good luck out there,
-Eric

Essentials of Radio Wave Propagation (The Cambridge Wireless Essentials Series) Review

Essentials of Radio Wave Propagation (The Cambridge Wireless Essentials Series)

I seldom have the desire to write any type of a review for a text that I would not recommend to someone else. However, I feel the need to say that if you are searching for a text to introduce you to radio wave propagation...just keep browsing. This is NOT the one to get. There is really very little of value here, in my humble opinion. This text has very little detail on any aspect of propagation and instead refers the reader to other works, such as the ITU-R publications, for further details, far too often. I was so relieved that I purchased it at a huge discount from a used bookseller.
I recommend the following texts:
Propagation of Radiowaves, 2nd Edition (Electromagnetic Waves)
Radiowave Propagation
Introduction to RF Propagation

Wireless Internet Telecommunications (Artech House Mobile Communications) Review

Wireless Internet Telecommunications (Artech House Mobile Communications)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the book, the author traces the development of the Internet and wireless communication during the last 30 years. Hardly anyone on planet earth will be untouched by these rapid evolving technologies. He describes a fictitious family Alice, Bob, Charles and Diana who live some time in the future. The fictitious family have all their daily programs scheduled and evolved around the latest Wireless Internet Communication technology available then.
Why is wireless communication catching on so rapidly all of a sudden? After all, as the author rightly pointed out, ever since the beginning of time, human beings have been using wireless communication to communicate. They do this by shouting or using smoke signals. Hertz started the ball rolling when he discovered that electromagnetic waves could propagate not just over wires but even without wireless through the air. It is, however, the development of the Internet during this period which brought in all the killer applications in wireless communications that eventually provided the catalyst for the scramble.
The book describes varies aspects of the different Internet Protocols as well as how they work in conjunction with mobility management. With mobility, network security is becoming more and more important. This is especially so with widespread usage of wireless Internet and other wireless applications. The author devoted one whole chapter to this important topic and suggested solutions to the potential problems.

Next big event in Internet evolution is IPV6. The whole Internet community is waiting for its release as the present IPV4 is proving to be inadequate to handle the explosion of Internet users and the crying need for larger address space as well as other problems associated with IPV4.

The author gives equal treatment to all the above trends in Wireless Internet Communications. In the last chapter of the book, he took a peek into the exciting future including 4G.
