Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and Practice Review

Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and Practice

The authors of this tome have taken on the task of covering the field of cognitive radio, a complex field that spans from technical to regulatory issues that an engineer or interested party must learn in order to undertake participation in the field. The book is written in a very clear and lucid style, with a well organized layout that is conducive to flipping open the book to a section and quickly reading the definition. By way of example, if you are M-Ary PSK or Slotted Aloha or 802.22, you can quickly flip to that section and get a sufficient overview to sound intelligent in a conversation. However the book goes far deeper. Each chapter gives you depth on not just implementation, but also history of development and where things are going in the future. The book includes algorithms and problems to give a comprehensive education on the field of cognitive radio.
A brief warning--the book is not geared towards the financial person looking to learn about the field or the engineer just getting into wireless. It presumes you are an electrical engineer, with not only an understanding of wireless communication, but also an understanding of software defined radio. There are some introductory chapters, but the reader who will gain the most will be coming to this book with a strong knowledge base. Without that base, I imagine the book will still be useful, but only about 20% of it will make sense. With those thoughts in mind, I recommend the book to those looking to learn about cognitive radio, but the beginners to wireless should likely look elsewhere.

RFID+: CompTIA RFID+ Study Guide and Practice Exam (RF0-001) Review

RFID+: CompTIA RFID+ Study Guide and Practice Exam (RF0-001)
Average Reviews:

I've just passed the RFID+ exam after preparing mostly from this book. The author seems to have a knack of making difficult concepts easier to understand without compromising accuracy. The whole book flows like a story and there is no hopping from topic to topic as is usually found in most exam study guides. No fluff---just nuggets of information---yet all concepts explained in a crisp, concise, and easy to understand way. I know that it takes tons of experience and skills to write a book in this way.
First chapter refreshed my Math and basic Physics concepts necessary to understand the material in the book. Each chapter begins with listing the exam objectives that will be covered in the chapter; so I knew where I was in my exam preparation. It was also re-assuring to see that all the exam objectives were covered. Each chapter ends with a list of definitions of important terms introduced in the chapter. Each concept is defined and explained where it appears the first time...this makes this book self-contained and easy to understand.
The way material is presented, you do not need any other reference or any prior knowledge of RFID to understand this book. Actually, if you read this book first, all other books will make much more sense.
The coverage of the exam topics is comprehensive enough and the questions in the practice exam are quite realistic. I liked the exercises (and solutions) throughout the chapters, which helped me to comprehend the difficult concepts. Notes, Tips, and Alerts re-enforced the important points. Although I have passed the exam, this book is going to stay on my shelf, as I find it an excellent reference book too; a nice introduction to the field.
If you want to enter the magnificent field of RFID, this book is your gateway.

Nokia Smartphone Hacks: Tips & Tools for Your Smallest Computer Review

Nokia Smartphone Hacks: Tips and Tools for Your Smallest Computer
Average Reviews:

When I first heard about the book, I honestly wasn't excited. I've been very disappointed by my Nokia 3650 dumbphone. (the os is slow, ugly and hard to use and the bluetooth is nearly unusable, etc...) I haven't yet gotten to the point of replacing it, but when I do I planned to get anything but a Nokia. Naturally, I really saw no point in having a book about such the wretched Nokia 60 series phones.
As I was flipping through the book, I was quite surprised by how much the phone could do that I didn't know about. I read through some of the hacks and was so intrigued that I took the book with me to lunch and played with it a while. Since then, I've been trying to download some of the applications mentioned and have been playing with the phone non-stop. The book has definitely brought new life to my 3650.
The book is a mixture of advanced usage tips and cool applications that can make a Nokia phone much more useful. Normally I wouldn't want to see general tips in a Hacks book, but Nokia does such a poor job at providing information about how to use their phones, that most of the coverage of the standard stuff was brand new to me. I had no idea how to store numbers on my sim card or quick dial from it, for example. Maybe I'm slow, but I was happy for that coverage.
Despite only having 75 hacks, I got a lot of value out the book. I would recommend it to anyone with a Nokia phone that wants to get the most out of their phone. If this were a $40 book, I don't know that I could recommend it. But for a $16 book, it's an easy buy for any Nokia user. I think I've seen faceplates cost more than that. If you aren't sure, go browse through it at a local store. Like most hacks books, the value (or lack thereof) will be quickly evident.

Crystal Clear: The Struggle for Reliable Communications Technology in World War II Review

Crystal Clear: The Struggle for Reliable Communications Technology in World War II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just before World War II the Army Air Corp and the Armored forces ran some tests using crystal controlled radios vs. other typed of frequency control. Their conclusion, without crystals you have radios, with crystals you have communications.
The Army Signal Corp basically had no choice but to agree. Crystal controlled radios were so far superior tht there was really no decision. Except for one little point.
The production of crystals for radios in the United States (and in the rest of the world) was essentially intended for the ham radio market. In the united states this amounted to about 100,000 crystals a year. They were made by small 'mom and pop' companies across the US. Now every airplane was going to need from one to ten crystals, so will every tank. So will every radio from the hand held walkie-talkie up to the search radars. Let's do some calculating, and we come up with needing 2,000,000 crystals per MONTH.
This book is the story of coming up to eventually 2.5 million crystals a month.
It's the story of a couple of youngsters grinding five crystals and taking them for examination at the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation (later to change its name to Motorola). They passed the testing and left Galvin that afternoon with an order in their pocket for 80,000 crystals.
It's the story of the technological manufacturing miracle that went a long way to helping win the war. Think about it. When you see American soldiers in war movies, they talk to each other using radios. The Germans and the Japanese don't.
Splendid book on a little knows aspect of World War II.

Quartz crystal-a technology that changed the tide of World War IISome of the defining leaps in technology in the twentieth century occurred during the Second World War, from radar to nuclear energy. Often left out of historical discussions are quartz crystals, which proved to be just as pivotal to the Allied victory-and to post-war development-as other technologies. Quartz crystals provided the U.S. military, for the first time, with reliable communication on the front lines, and then went on to become the core of some of the most basic devices of the post-war era, from watches, clocks, and color televisions, to cell phones and computers. In Crystal Clear, Richard Thompson relates the story of the quartz crystal in World War II, from its early days as a curiosity for amateur radio enthusiasts, to its use by the United States Armed Forces. It follows the intrepid group of scientists and engineers from the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the U.S. Army as they raced to create an effective quartz crystal unit. They had to find a reliable supply of radio-quality quartz; devise methods to reach, mine, and transport the quartz; find a way to manufacture quartz crystal oscillators rapidly; and then solve the puzzling "aging problem" that plagued the early units. Ultimately, the development of quartz oscillators became the second largest scientific undertaking in World War II after the Manhattan Project.Bringing to light a little-known aspect of World War II, Crystal Clear offers a glimpse inside one of the most significant efforts in the annals of engineering.

Well writen and well presented. Chapters on HSDPA and HSUPA are very good. Summary bullet points at the start of each chapter are a nice idea - good for revision when you're trying to remember everything. Also useful to have the relevant 3GPP specifications listed there. Chapter on logical, transport and physical channels includes plenty of detail. Signalling procedures chapter very comprehensive. Good to see link budgets described in detail. This book should be valuable to anyone working on or studying UMTS.

Overall, I am pleased with its content. It is clearly written. The topics are covered in a nice way that is comprehensive. The treatment of topics is balanced. Some topics are overemphasized but that may be necessary for people who are beginners in the field.
Many books are available in this field, but I believe this one is very comprehensive, especially emphasizing wimax and Lte technology no other book has done.
