This is a nice book. Dr. McCune does a very nice job of presenting digital wireless communications in a practical and easy-to-understand format. I particularly like the thorough treatments of Nyquist filtering, the Shannon channel capacity formula, and the concept of Eb/N0. The author clearly has a deep understanding and mastery of the subject, and he presents the material in a well-organized and clear format. My intuitive understanding of the subject has greatly improved as a result of reading this book. It complements the books by Sklar and Proakis, and I would recommend it to any serious student of digital communications.

The book was exactly what I was looking for, it covers TDMA, CDMA, GSM and AMPS very well, giving enough information that I feel pretty good about my knowledge of the technologies as a phone technician. The graphics were good, and the writing was at a level I could, for the most part understand. The last few chapters actually dicuss many of the actual tests that I use in my shop, and made a lot of things really clear - I'd almost like to see these chapters get more in depth, but it is really good as it is. Any tech working on cell phones or cellular/PCS networks should read this book.

CWNA: Certified Wireless Network Administrator Study Guide (Exam PW0-100) Review

CWNA: Certified Wireless Network Administrator Study Guide (Exam PW0-100)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm using this book as reference material in a wireless LAN course I'm teaching at a local college. I started out using the official CWNA study guide but I like this one better and have switched to it for the following reasons:
1. It is more up to date.
2. It has lots fewer typo errors.
3. The CD adds value to the book.
4. I like the end of chapter multiple choice questions (and the answers are in the book).
5. The authors explain concepts in a clear and concise manner.
I wish the authors could have done more with Security. But security is such a complex topic, it really needs a book of its own and one or two chapters in any book is not enough to really cover this topic.
The students like this book and actually like it better than the books selected by the previous instructor. All in all I think it's a great value. If you want to learn the basics of wireless networking, get this book and a wireless access point and wireless adapter card for your computer and go for it.

Wireless LAN Radios: System Definition to Transistor Design (IEEE Series on Digital & Mobile Communication) Review

Wireless LAN Radios: System Definition to Transistor Design (IEEE Series on Digital and Mobile Communication)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a systems engineer without a deep understanding of radio architectures or the associated impairments, I found this book to be a great introduction to not just wireless LAN radios, but radios in general.
The major classifications of radio architectures along with their strong points and shortcomings were introduced. Potential impairments along with the impact of architecture choice on each were delineated. A brief introduction to the design of the major blocks along with the calibration techniques required to provide adequate performance was provided. Finally, some case studies were described.
After reading this book, I could delve more deeply into the literature with confidence, had a good understanding of what effects I would need to model, and was a put in a good position to ask the right questions of our RF design team.
Overall, it was very easy to read and got me started very quickly. My only gripe would be with the fairly large number of typos in the book.

Signal Design for Good Correlation: For Wireless Communication, Cryptography, and Radar Review

Signal Design for Good Correlation: For Wireless Communication, Cryptography, and Radar
Average Reviews:

One of the authors, Solomon Golomb, is world renowned in cryptography circles. This text lets you see some of his efforts. It gives an extensive treatment of encrypting a signal in such ways that it can be efficiently decrypted, without compromising the security of the encoding. Of course, as just stated, this sounds rather vague. The book explains, in rigorous detail, the maths behind this.
The book appears best suited for a graduate level course, or for professionals in the field. Perhaps for undergraduates with some prior exposure to information theory and electrical engineering.

RF System Design of Transceivers for Wireless Communications Review

RF System Design of Transceivers for Wireless Communications

(More customer reviews)
I came across this book after I went through a few books on RF system design. I guess I can confidently say that the book covers the most important aspects of the RF system design such as noise figure, inter-modulation and adjacent channel power ratio calculations. The cascaded system analysis (Noise figure and OIP calculations)are explained in a very straightforward and easy to follow manner. Of particular interest is the section on the architectural trade-off analysis. This section provides a very clear overview of fundamental issues that impact RF system design in most practical environments.This book has room for improvement though. In particular, the ADC noise figure analysis for the band-pass sampling (appendix 3D) does not cover the ADC non-linearity, the jitter noise and the aliasing due to sub-sampling. Moreover, most of the examples are around the mobile hand-set systems. In my opinion expanding the analysis to the base-station could benefit some readers in this area.
Reader can find himself annoyed by many typo errors in the bibliography section. I am expecting these minor issues to be resolved over the subsequent editions. Overall, I recommend this book for RF system designers who need an up-to-date encyclopedia in this area.

Wireless Hacking: Projects for Wi-Fi Enthusiasts: Cut the cord and discover the world of wireless hacks

If you're highly interested in hacking together wi-fi networks and such, you'll probably enjoy Wireless Hacking Projects for Wi-Fi Enthusiasts by Lee Barken and the SoCalFreeNet.org Wireless Users Group. I personally had hoped for something a little different, however...
Chapter list: A Brief Overview of the Wireless World; SoCalFreeNet.org: Building Large Scale Community Wireless Networks; Securing Our Wireless Community; Wireless Access Points; Wireless Client Access Devices; Wireless Operating Systems; Monitoring Your Network; Low-Cost Commercial Options; Mesh Networking; Antennas; Building Outdoor Enclosures and Antenna Masts; Solar-Powered Access Points and Repeaters; Wireless 802.11 Hacks; Index
OK, to be fair, there's a lot of technical information in this book. SoCalFreeNet.org is a group committed to building community access wireless networks in order to offer free wireless coverage for everyone in the range of the network. They go into great detail on the hardware to use, how to configure it, the reason for setting up an access portal, building a firewall for the network, and so on. If this is your interest or if you're interested in starting this type of a network in your area, I don't think there's another book out there that would help as much.
Having said that, I'd probably be a little less harsh if the book had been titled How To Build A Community Wireless Network Based On The SoCalFreeNet.org Model. Someone who is looking to play around with wi-fi in their own house, build cantennas, or possibly control devices over the wireless network will have to dig hard in the book to find what they are looking for. The information is there, but it seems to be secondary to the primary purpose (or what I perceive it to be), which is to spread wireless access to the masses.
So, depending on what you're looking for, this may or may not be a good match for you. I was expecting something different from the title and cover, and was somewhat disappointed...

Building Secure Wireless Networks with 802.11 Review

Building Secure Wireless Networks with 802.11
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wireless networking is the hottest technological innovation of the past few years, but the unpleasant fact is that security is its greatest weakness. In a crowded market of computer security titles, a niche exists for a book that lays out wireless security problems and couples them with solutions.
Unfortunately, this is not that book. While well written, the book is thin on security matters; security is only first dealt with in chapter six. That coverage is interrupted by five chapters on building wireless networks. Discussion of security doesn't resume until chapter twelve.
Despite its title, the book is more about setting up, configuring, and managing wireless networks, with occasional digressions into security issues. Only about 35 pages of this 320-page book directly deal with wireless security. The book would make a good introduction for designing wireless networks, but it falls short as a security reference.

This is a very nicely produced republication of the 1922 Collins (no, not THAT Collins) Radio Amateur's Hand Book (no, not THAT Handbook). The original text was scanned and printed in a good modern font. The figures, however, were not redrawn, so they are a little fuzzy.
Forgotten Books makes this book available on-line for free browsing (but not downloading), or you can buy the hardcopy from Amazon. I recommend the hardcopy for easy reading. (Numerous other versions are available on-line, but many do not contain the illustrations, which are critical in this book.)
After publication of the 1922 revision, there was a review in QST that took the author to task for presenting various obsolete circuits and techniques, even by 1923 standards. For us in 2009, however, it is fascinating to read the details about how to construct spark gap and vacuum tube (CW) transmitters and their corresponding receivers, even though the historical progression is not thoroughly explained.
This is a book that belongs on every ham operator's history shelf.

Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called "hams," use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public service, recreation and self-training.Amateur radio operators enjoy personal wireless communications with each other and are able to support their communities with emergency and disaster communications if necessary, while increasing their personal knowledge of electronics and radio theory. An estimated six million people throughout the world are regularly involved with amateur radio.The term "amateur" is not a reflection on the skills of the participants, which are often quite advanced; rather, "amateur" indicates that amateur radio communications are not allowed to be made for commercial or money-making purposes. Born in Dublin, he moved to London at the age of twenty and lived in England for the remainder of his life. Shaw's first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, but he had a bent for drama: during his career he authored more than sixty plays. Nearly all of his writings dealt sternly with prevailing social problems, but are nicely leavened by a vein of comedy to make their stark themes more palatable. He pondered education, marriage, religion, government, health care, and class privilege and found them all defective, but his ire was most aroused by the exploitation of the working class by heartless employers; his writings seldom fail to censure that abuse.An ardent socialist, Shaw wrote many brochures and speeches for the Fabian Soc

I purchased, read, and refer to this book. It is good. But different from my other PLL books. On a higher more technical level than the other PLL books which I have reviewed. Reads more like a thesis than the other PLL books. I feel that it covers exactly what the title indicates, more wireless communication and space-based PLL coverage than the other books, except no 'implementations' except at conceptual mathematical level. Not a circuits book. No circuits to copy/use. Much more of a pure PLL communications theory book.

Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Digitial,Analog and Optical Implementations, Second Edition presents acomplete tutorial of phase-locked loops from analog implementations todigital and optical designs. The text establishes a thoroughfoundation of continuous-time analysis techniques and maintains aconsistent notation as discrete-time and non-uniform sampling arepresented. New to this edition is a complete treatment of charge pumpsand the complementary sequential phase detector. Another importantchange is the increased use of MATLAB, implemented to providemore familiar graphics and reader-derived phase-locked loopsimulation. Frequency synthesizers and digital divideranalysis/techniques have been added to this second edition. Perhapsmost distinctive is the chapter on optical phase-locked loops thatbegins with sections discussing components such as lasers andphotodetectors and finishing with homodyne and heterodyne loops.Starting with a historical overview, presenting analog, digital, andoptical PLLs, discussing phase noise analysis, and includingcircuits/algorithms for data synchronization, this volume contains newtechniques being used in this field. Highlights of the SecondEdition:
Development of phase-locked loopsfrom analog to digital and optical, with consistent notationthroughout;
Expanded coverage of the loop filters used todesign second and third order PLLs;
Design examples ondelay-locked loops used to synchronize circuits on CPUs and ASICS;
New material on digital dividers that dominate a frequencysynthesizer's noise floor. Techniques to analytically estimate thephase noise of a divider;
Presentation of optical phase-lockedloops with primers on the optical components and fundamentals ofoptical mixing;
Section on automatic frequency control toprovide frequency-locking of the lasers instead of phase-locking;
Presentation of charge pumps, counters, and delay-lockedloops.

If you are looking for a book that clearly explains the mysteries of OFDM and COFDM then, you will have to wait. This is not that book. Much is left to "as an exercise for the student." There is some generic stuff on coding but how it relates to multipath mitigation is not clear. There are no good pictures of spectrums. The effect of amplifier non-linearities is inadequately addressed. The concept of IFFT as applied to modulation is not explained in a way you can understand it quickly. The section on coherent and differential detection is uneven in the amount of detail and understandability. The whole book has in places either too much math or not enough. There is no section on performance that tells you what the end to performance might be. Good try but far from perfect.

SonicWALL Secure Wireless Network Integrated Solutions Guide Review

SonicWALL Secure Wireless Network Integrated Solutions Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary: Very useful guide for designing a wireless network using a SonicWALL firewall and SonicPoint wireless access points. Note that the book is written for the older 802.11a/b/g SonicPoint G access points, so about 10% of it will be out of date for new 802.11n SonicPoint N access points. Nevertheless, it's worth the money if you are using SonicWALL firewalls and either SonicPoint G or N access points. Also, I really enjoyed the insightful Forward by Joe Levy (CTO of SonicWALL, Inc.) on wireless in general.
About me: I am a computer systems administrator for a 75-person manufacturing company. I have been using SonicWALL firewalls for about 10 years and am currently about half way through a project to switch out my four Cisco Aironet 1200 802.11g access points for four SonicWALL N access points.
The first part of the book is an overview of wireless and then general design principles and guidelines (infrastructure, site survey, security, your business goals, etc.). I found it well presented and useful as I am reassessing and re-designing my wireless infrastucture.
The rest of the book is a step-by-step guide with decent explanations of why for each step. Note that it is written for the SonicPoint G access points, which are the 802.11a/b/g model. However, Sonicwall recently released their new SonicPoint N devices, so some of the material was out of date for me. Still, the configuration difference between the G and N models are small, so most of it applies.
To configure my SonicPoint N access points, I downloaded the latest SonicWALL documentation (SonicOS Enhanced 5.4 Administrator's Guide), which is free from [...]. The Admin Guide is technically in-depth but lacks some of the design philosophy and answers to why questions that the book covers.
FYI, the reason I am switching from Cisco Aironets to SonicPoints are these:
1. To get 802.11n speed (I am getting 300Mbit consistently with the SonicPoint N's)
3. To centrally control my access points from my SonicWALL 3500 ("wireless on a string"), rather than having to manually configure each Aironet independently. Cisco sells a control console, but why buy that when I already own a central console in my firewall. My Aironets have been rock-solid for three years, and I have been very happy with them.
4. To separate my wireless network from my LAN with a firewall. Up to now, I have had my Aironets on my LAN switch, which does not follow current wireless security best practices. Now I will have all traffic from my WLAN to my LAN being scanned by all the services on the fireewall (antivirus, attacks, intrusion prevention, rogue access point detection, etc.)
4. To set up guest wireless for my two conference rooms. The SonicPoint N's can have multiple WLANs on each physical access point, so they can service both my internal users (corp WLAN) and guests (guest WLAN) at the same time securely separated by the rules on the firewall. Very cool feature and has worked well in my testing.

Nearly forty percent of the world's 1 billion+ Internet users are wireless. It's a truly staggering fact to think that the majority of these wireless implementations are fundamentally insecure, leaving users and private data at risk. Many wireless proprietors think that the convenience of wireless outweighs the possible risk of insecure impelentation, or that secure wireless is far too complicated to worry about deploying. SonicWALL Secure Wireless Networks Integrated Solutions Guide provides a systematic approach to creating secure wireless networks, using the Plan, Design, Implement, and Optimize model. This introduction to wireless network security is both comprehensive and easy to understand.
