IP Design for Mobile Networks Review

Cisco Press has published many technical books about their products and about networking in general. But this book is a little atypical in that it seems to have far more detailed content. Also and perhaps pleasantly to some readers, the level of detail is not about an exhaustive explanation of the features of some Cisco product. You could construe this book as a timely discourse on numerous industry efforts at the intersection and integration of mobile networking (which is effectively equivalent to the use of cellphones) and the Internet.
One topic bruited about is the use of femtocells to improve cellular reach; especially inside buildings. Three methods are given - WiMax, UTMS and cdma2000. A chapter gives a detailed scrutiny of the latter.
For the Internet, there is much about IPv6. It seems far easier to handle cellphones and the movement of these via IPv6 than shoehorning the problem into IPv4. The reader might be struck by the idea that this, finally, could be what drives a large scale deployment of IPv6.
We also see that within IPv6, advances have been made. There are details of an improved next generation IPv6. Chapter 4 seems to be a key section of the book. Titled "An IP Refresher", it does not just cover the usual beginner's stuff about v4 and v6, but delves into cutting edge material.
Later portions of the book also explain how the 3G and 4G cellphone levels might evolve and tie into the Internet. The text is a useful complement to these recent offerings on 4g - IP for 4G by Wisely, and 4G Roadmap and Emerging Communication Technologies (Universal Personal Communications) by Kim.

Peer-to-Peer Computing: Building Supercomputers with Web Technologies (Computer Communications and Networks) Review

Peer-to-Peer Computing: Building Supercomputers with Web Technologies (Computer Communications and Networks)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is more specialised than the more recent text on peer to peer computing, P2P Networking and Applications (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking). The latter is a general survey across the major existing p2p platforms, while Loo describes one particular p2p instantiation.
The book starts off with a quick summary of other p2p networks. But it then focuses on 1 p2p developed by the author. Java is the language of choice, and the narrative goes from a discussion of network programming in java to servlets and thence into the p2p code. It explains how the code can be distributed across machines on TCP/IP. The functionality is a little limited but in some ways, that's the point. Loo shows enough to let an experienced java programmer build out what she wants.
If you have used one of the popular p2p networks, then you'll see a big difference here in the lack of a GUI. The author has left it up to the reader to build one.
There is also a brief discussion about a wireless p2p network running on cellphones. Maybe this has some interest to you?

Client/Server architecture was first proposed in the late 1980s as an alternative to conventional mainframe systems. Mainframe processing quickly becomes a bottleneck in any information system, but client/server models shift the processing burden to the client computer. Through workload sharing, client/server systems can improve overall efficiency while reducing budgets.Companies are again searching for ways to improve their processing power without further investment in new hardware and software. Many client computers are idle most of the time, and have unused disk space. The next logical step is to maximise the resources of these computers, and the peer-to-peer (P2P) model is the answer. A new and simple peer-to-peer model will be introduced in this book. In it:' Readers will be taught to install peer-to-peer systems which can then manage and distribute the processing power of any number of clients. ' The size of network can range from two to over a million computers. ' The software necessary to implement peer-to-peer systems quickly can be downloaded from the book's website at www.springer.com/1-84628-381-7/The deployment of web technologies will enable individuals and organisations of all sizes to use computers across a network as though it were a single supercomputer to solve complex problems, and after reading this book, readers will be able to install a peer-to-peer system of any size.

Digital Techniques for Wideband Receivers, Second Edition Review

Digital Techniques for Wideband Receivers, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a great intro to digital receiver design and techniques. The focus of this book however, is for those receivers which are used for Radar Warning Receivers (RWRs). The second chapter starts off with typical and desirable characteristics applicable to these type of receivers (wides bandwidth and large instantaneous dynamic range, etc). He then uses this intro to gradually introduce all parts of a receiver and signal processing techniques.
This book covers ADC and their pertinent selection criteria, analog RF chain analysis, probability of detection, FFTs, monobit receiver design, antenna arrays, angle of arrival, spectral estimation techniques (I actually like the presentation here more than compared to Proakis and Manolakis's Digital Signal Processing book), and then how do you test it all as a system.
There are many more topics that I am missing, but I think that I have hit on the main points. All in all, I would recommend this book if you are interested in learning the techniques used in RWRs, but the chapter on ADCs is also good for any designer looking for ways to choose ADCs and how to test them.

60GHz Technology for Gbps WLAN and WPAN: From Theory to Practice Review

60GHz Technology for Gbps WLAN and WPAN: From Theory to Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
60 GHz is now at the upper frontier of commercial radio technology but for the newcomer it is hard to approach because background material is scattered in many places. With the exception of the Teshirogi & Yoneyama book, which is both dated now and covers a broader selection of millimeterwave bands, this is the first book to cover the whole variety of key technical issues related to this band. The focus and main term of reference is the IEEE 802.15.3c, but the discussion usually goes beyond the specific design choices in that standard. Both PHY and MAC layer issues are discussed as well as hardware implementation and antenna issues.
The introduction in Chapt. 1 is flawed slightly by the statement that the Japanese regulator developed regulations for 60 GHz in 2000 and the FCC followed in the US the next year. In reality, FCC adopted the first rules in this area in 1995, using the unlicensed approach proposed by the UK's regulator in 1988 - but not implemented at that time. But this is an issue for spectrum policy wonks that detracts little from the value of the book.
If you are knowledgeable in the basics of wireless digital technology and need to understand how systems near 60 GHz work and in particular IEEE 802.15.3c systems, this book is an excellent place to start. Although not primarily intended as a textbook, it might be a useful supplement to microwave education courses in giving examples of the specific issues that come up in the millimeter ave bands.

Building the Mobile Internet (Networking Technology) Review

Building the Mobile Internet (Networking Technology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Do you need to increase your understanding of how mobility can be supported in IP networking? If you do, then this book is for you! Authors Mark Grayson, Kevin Shatzkamer and Klaas Wierenga have done an outstanding job of writing a book that examines the different techniques for building mobility into the Internet.
Authors Grayson, Shatzkamer and Wierenga, begin by defining the mobility market in terms of device proliferation, consumption trends and radio-specific challenges in scaling for massive adoption of the mobile Internet. They also explain the protocols and layers that make up the Internet architecture; as well as, the fundamental problem with that architecture in supporting mobility. The authors continue by describing how users and devices are authenticated for using the network and its applications; in particular, those that are not operated by the operator that the user has a subscription with. Then, they explain the benefits of solving mobility at the data link layer. Next, they provide an overview of a number of network layer solutions for delivering seamless mobility and session continuity. The authors also describe the advantages of integrating mobility functionality into transport/session layer. They continue by describing how the application layer can be enhanced with additional mobility functionality, thus allowing advanced mobility use cases to be supported, including the ability to move media sessions between different devices. Finally, the authors provide an overview of the approaches fro redesigning the Internet architecture to allow better mobility; as well as, a discussion of the pros and cons of some typical examples of those approaches.
This most excellent book takes a look at mobility from a broad perspective of use cases and examines how mobility solutions are in fact pervasive across all layers of the protocol stack. Perhaps more importantly, the book provides details of how mobility functionality has been added to these layers and describes use cases that demonstrate the different approaches to building the mobile Internet.

iPhone Pocket Guide, The (5th Edition) (Peachpit Pocket Guide) Review

iPhone Pocket Guide, The (5th Edition) (Peachpit Pocket Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It has been said many times already, but it's worth repeating: iPhone has completely revolutionized the way that we think of the phone, and is arguably the greatest leap in telephony since the mobile phones had gone mainstream. In recent couple of years many other smartphones have tried to emulate or even surpass much of the iPhone's magic, but with every new iteration Apple manages to pull away from the rest of the pack. This is certainly true of iPhone 4, which has taken the quality and usability to a whole new level. All the antenna issues notwithstanding, iPhone 4 is arguably the most user-friendly and stylish smartphone on the market today. Even so, most users never quite manage to take the full advantage of all of its many advanced features. An accessible and to-the-point user guide can be a huge help in mastering your iPhone 4.
This short pocket guide aims to take away the mystery behind iPhone 4 and help you make the most of it. The guide is written in an extremely accessible and to-the-point style, and from the very outset it takes you straight to the actual demonstrations of how to achieve certain actions on your iPhone. It helps you navigate the plethora of settings and adjustment options, and tries to make sense of them. This is in fact one of the books's greatest strengths - it is not just a bag of tricks, but a clear and lucid explanation of the rationale behind every design option on your iPhone (both hardware and software). Even seasoned iPhone users will find many valuable tips and insights, and the book is a valuable reference for the long term use.
I also enjoyed the format of the book. As the name suggests, it is rather small but I would still not attempt to put it in my pocket. The illustrations, although small, are very clear and help to illustrate all the relevant material. It is a very intuitive guide for a very intuitive device.
