This is indeed written in a clear understandable style that takes you from the problem to the proposed solution in an understandable progression. It is the only book I've found on the subject that I would recommend, and I've read them all. Working as an engineer on the system he briefly gives as an example, it is the book I recommend to all our engineers getting involved in Mobile IP for the first time. If you are looking for something to tell you what mobility in a network environment means, this is the one. Unlike some others, "no previous experience required" here.

Mobile IP (Internet Protocol) brings together two of the world's most powerful technology trends: the Internet and mobile communications. This is the first book to clearly explain what Mobile IP is, how it works, and the security implications of its use. "This could become the Mobile IP "bible"... -- Gabriel Montenegro, Sun Microsystems. Mobile IP: The Internet Unplugged reviews the problems Mobile IP is designed to solve, and how it solves them. It shows how to use Mobile IP in real-world campus and Internet-wide applications, and reviews the state-of-the-art in Mobile IP network security -- including the role of key management, encryption, authentication, integrity checking and non-repudiation. There is also detailed coverage of essential concepts including agent discovery, registration, IP encapsulation. The book also presents models for delivering commercial service using Mobile IP, and reviews the technical issues that still need attention. Part of the Prentice Hall Series in Computer Networking and Distributed Systems, Radia Perlman, Series Editor. For anyone interested in mobile internetworking as an implementer, network manager, architect, service provider, or student.

New Tech, New Ties: How Mobile Communication Is Reshaping Social Cohesion Review

New Tech, New Ties: How Mobile Communication Is Reshaping Social Cohesion

This work is honestly not for the non-academic. Rich Ling takes up an interesting question: can mediated interactions - ones that take place through some form of technology rather than face to face - have the same outcomes that we would expect from interaction ritual theory?
To begin with, one needs to understand the context of that question and what his claim - that interactions through phones (particularly cellphones) meet the criteria of interaction ritual - and know that he is engaging Randall Collins (and by extension Erving Goffman and Emile Durkheim's work on interactions) theory about what makes up a "successful interaction".
By analyzing cellphone conversations (admittedly, his methodology is a little spotty, but not to an extent that undermines his findings) Ling is able to point to how phone conversations still involved the entrainment of the participants and an emotional engagement usually thought to be the product of embodied interaction. At the very least, Ling's book points toward further research questions on how different forms of technology and media affect our social interactions and what that means for emerging social life.
i recommend this for those interested in social theory, media, and technology. i DO NOT recommend this to the casual reader unless you are looking for something completely different.

Is My Cell Phone Bugged?: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Mobile Conversations Private Review

Is My Cell Phone Bugged: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Mobile Conversations Private
Average Reviews:

I don't like to be a downer and talk about topics that scare us or call up negative feelings, but family security is something that needs to be considered. In my travels and relationships I have run into situations where someone isn't feeling safe. Whether it is a jealous ex- boyfriend making threats, an information hacker gaining access to personal information or an obstinate teenager on a joy ride in Mom and Dad's car, safety is paramount.
I was given a book called Is My Cell Phone Bugged?: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Mobile Conversations Private by Kevin D. Murray, who has been a consultant in detection and counterespionage for 31 years. At first I thought, "Why would I need to know if my phone is bugged? It clearly isn't. Who would want to listen in on me?" but then I got into the reading and found that the book isn't just about phone tapping, it's about knowing what people are capable of and how to protect yourself and your family.
As it turns out, there is quite a bit out there on the market today that can turn your life upside down without detection. Things like Zombie phones and Bluetooth hacking make my skin goose bump with dread. I have become a relatively technologically savvy person over the last few years, but part of me has always felt frightened of someone getting a hold of my personal information. New apps and wireless capabilities make it so easy for us to transfer data from one place to another-sensitive material- and yet we do it almost carelessly.
The public is lucky that most cell phones that are on the market, particularly the "smart" ones, have built in anti-spyware software that will protect you in a general way, but there are still devices and spyware out there that can listen in on us.
This book gives great information on what can be done to you, how to know it is being done and even offers a free alert device that can detect possible leaks on your cell phone. He also points out that listening to your gut and matching that with important clues can be a powerful combination when you are worried about safety.
It is also interesting (and scary) to know that the average person is capable of spying. For instance, what if you suspect your nanny is stealing from you? Is your teenager where they say they were going? There are plenty of options for a protective parent to get a good look at the whole picture, rather than waiting a worrying about what is really going on.
"Is My Cell Phone Bugged" provides a comprehensive look at what is available to almost anyone, how to use it and how to protect yourself from it. The knowledge that can be gained from Kevin D. Murray is invaluable and with no exception, knowledge is power.

Numerical Techniques in Electromagnetics with MATLAB, Third Edition Review

Numerical Techniques in Electromagnetics with MATLAB, Third Edition

This book is really well written. It goes into detail on a difficult subject and doesnt assume you already know the basics like a lot of books do. It goes into both the theory and how you would implement a numerical solution via matlab. Definately worth the expense if you are learning numerical solutions of EM problems.

Despite the dramatic growth in the availability of powerful computer resources, the EM community lacks a comprehensive text on the computational techniques used to solve EM problems. The first edition of Numerical Techniques in Electromagnetics filled that gap and became the reference of choice for thousands of engineers, researchers, and students. This third edition of the bestselling text reflects the continuing increase in awareness and use of numerical techniques and incorporates advances and refinements made in recent years. Most notable among these are the improvements made to the standard algorithm for the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and treatment of absorbing boundary conditions in FDTD, finite element, and transmission-line-matrix methods. The author also has added a chapter on the method of lines. Numerical Techniques in Electromagnetics with MATLAB, Third Edition continues to teach readers how to pose, numerically analyze, and solve EM problems, to give them the ability to expand their problem-solving skills using a variety of methods, and to prepare them for research in electromagnetism. Now the Third Edition goes even further toward providing a comprehensive resource that addresses all of the most useful computation methods for EM problems and includes MATLAB code instead of FORTRAN.

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP): Controlling Convergent Networks (McGraw-Hill Communication Series) Review

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP): Controlling Convergent Networks (McGraw-Hill Communication Series)
Average Reviews:

The book is not an easy read. Let me say that right up front. In part due to the inherent complexity of SIP. And the fact that when you try to use it in tandem with other protocols and products, the complexity increases.
However if you persevere, it may be worthwhile. SIP's main usage in the marketplace seems to be as one of the enabling underlayers of VoIP. And VoIP is growing strongly, due to the allure of free long distance calls.
Not that you are necessarily restricted to VoIP. Another advantage of the book is its delineation of various other applications that also use SIP.
