Programming for the Series 60 Platform and Symbian OS (Symbian Press) Review

Programming for the Series 60 Platform and Symbian OS (Symbian Press)

I expected this book to fill the gaps and give details beyond the Symbian/SDK documentation. This book does not do that at all. There is hardly anything in this book that you can't find else where. The book does not attempt to address "details" of a concept - it rather superficially "touches" a variety of subjects i.e. you can do this or that using Series 60 SDK, or here are the tyes of dialogs, queries etc. Although many of these discussions are accompanied by brief code snippets, those can also be found (in greater detail) in the Symbian/SDK documentation.
It is not a reference book which I expected it to be - rather its a book that explains the Series 60 in some technical detail. It can be helpful to a beginner who is just trying to understand the Series 60 patform, but it fails to assist real developers with real programming issues. This book played minimal part in helping me write my first Series 60 application - I had to rely on the documentation.
I'd give it 2.5 stars since its not completely worthless - but its not what it could/should be. Also you can tell that its been written by many different people as it lacks a consistent style, which I find irritating.

Testing UMTS: Assuring Conformance and Quality of UMTS User Equipment Review

Testing UMTS: Assuring Conformance and Quality of UMTS User Equipment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't be put off by the word "Testing" in the title - there is an emphasis on RF and protocol test aspects of the UE, but this book would still be very useful to someone who is involved with general UE development/support/testing rather than just those digging into the depths of PTCRB testing, for example.
Highlights:
- General UMTS architecture overview
- Physical layer
- Layer 2
- Layer 3
- Protocol testing
- HSDPA
- Future directions
- Guide to useful 3GPP technical specs, reasonably helpful index (as opposed to some early Wiley UMTS books)
The real highlight for me is the standard of technical writing: lucid, brief but not too terse, and - where I can tell - correct. I use this as my main UMTS technical reference for UE and air interface descriptions and supplement with other books for CN. As a bridge to the standards it works very well and is well worth the investment.

A modern mobile phone is a highly complex electronic system made up from a variety of diverse sub-systems, all of which must work seamlessly together. Today's users have very high expectations which set tough demands on manufacturers as they introduce third generation technology. While quality, in terms of the phone's stability, performance and behaviour on the network, originate from good design, the only way to be sure of quality is by testing it. This makes testing a very important part of any mobile phone's life cycle, from development through to manufacture and beyond, touching a number of different disciplines and departments.
Testing UMTS is divided in three sections. Section One provides an overview of major types of testing and the organisations and tasks involved. In particular it looks at what is involved in conformance testing and device certification. Section Two is more technical and looks at the UMTS standard itself, working through the protocol layers. Future trends and their impact on testing mobile devices are examined in Section Three, including the emergence of new technologies both in the access network and the core network and the evolution of new testing methodologies.
Examines UMTS and the testing of UMTS devices which are huge areas in the testing process
Provides essential information on processes and techniques for mobile phone testing
Operation of the UMTS standard is described from a test point of view
Focuses on most important areas of the 3rd-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard from a test perspective
Offers advice on products, services and resources that aid the testing process.

This book is an ideal text for engineers and managers who are either directly involved in the process of testing UMTS mobiles, or who are looking for an understanding of what is involved in testing. Professionals involved in the development of UMTS mobiles, integration and verification, conformance testing, operator acceptance testing, manufacturing and servicing will find this book indispensable.

Simulation and Software Radio for Mobile Communications (Artech House Universal Personal Communications) Review

Simulation and Software Radio for Mobile Communications (Artech House Universal Personal Communications)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Harada & Prasad provide a very good working-level
understanding of how to simulate communication systems
using MATLAB. This book will appeal to advanced
undergraduate and beginning graduate electrical
engineers. It emphasizes nuts&bolts simulation, and
assumes a good working knowledge of communication
system analysis. Professionals who use MATLAB to
analyze communication systems for a living will find
the coverage fairly basic - even shallow - but the
authors well meet their goal of giving beginners a
better leg up on the process. Including their MATLAB
source code on a CD with the book may make the purchase
worthwhile all by itself.

Windows Phone 7 Application Development: 24 Hour Trainer Review

Windows Phone 7 Application Development: 24 Hour Trainer

I wanted to get on board with Windows Phone development, I know a lot of folks making good money with apps. This was an easy read. I did not have much time for reading and needed to get the know-how quickly. I was able to create my first project in under 4 hours after reading the first 3 chapters. I was greatful to find a book with good code examples and stright to the point. I started to read a few of the other 800+ page Window Phone books out there, but got bogged down in nonsense. This book gave me hope and it really worked. Practical, to the point and a great extras CD.

I found this book a very good reference, the only weakness being ....the English translation. There are a number of typos as well.
Topics coverage is great. Very good job.

J2ME: The Complete Reference Review

J2ME: The Complete Reference
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book should be retitled as MIDPand JDBC:The complete reference. It is in NO way a complete reference for J2ME.
If you are looking a book on using the MIDP profile, this is as comprehensive as a book can get.It has complete code listings to explain each concept and has extensive coverage of the MIDP API's.
J2ME also consists of CDC profile that is used to write J2ME applications for wireless devices that are NOT memory constrained. When one clainms that they are creating a complete reference for J2ME, they cannot leave out CDC. This book does not even devote 1 chapter to explain CDC which is such a crucial part of J2ME. Instead the author wastes space and piles on chapters by explaining JDBC and web services.
Buy this book if you want to learn only MIDP, else this one is not for you.

High-Performance Communication Networks, Second Edition (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking) Review

High-Performance Communication Networks, Second Edition (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was used as the text of our graduate level course "telecommunication networks", but our instructor rarely used it in lectures, although he mentioned that most of the content would be covered in the exams. And we finally found that he cheated us, because this text was useless to prepare for the exams. :)
I find that this book almost covers everything, such as ISO/OSI, TCP/IP, telephone networks, xDSL, ATM, SONET, wireless, etc. When you want to know something, you can always find the terms in the index, but when you access the content and you will find it is so hard to read. You spend a lot of time on it, but at last you still do not understand more.
I recommend Tanenbaum's Computer Networks is a good book to understand many terms in communication networks, although there is some mistakes, such as CRC was interpreted as Cyclic Redundancy Code. If you want to know queuing theory, you can refer to Saadawi, et al.'s Fundamentals of Telecommunication Networks. If you want to know routing and switching, you can have a look at Perlman's Interconnections, Second Edition. These books are good to understand the basic theory of networking.
When you buy a book, your book should explain the relative terms thoroughly but maybe not cover everything, and with least errors and typos. Otherwise, you will feel annoyed to have it on your bookshelf.
