J2ME is a jungle of configurations, profiles, and APIs. A beginner's book might soar over the jungle like an exotic bird, pretty but insubstantial. Such a book would see everything from a 20,000 foot view. You'd see the lay of the land, but wouldn't get your feet wet.
Another approach would be for the authors to grab their machetes and start hacking their way in, following a particular path. You'd get all dirty and sweaty and get a lot of experience, but not necessarily understand exactly how you got there.
This book decidedly takes this latter path. After a brief introductory chapter, it concentrates on the core APIs and the most commonly implemented configuration and device profile. Although there's plenty of practical information on tools and lots of code examples, as a reader unfamiliar with J2ME, and someone who doesn't own a Java-enabled phone, I felt disoriented. As an introduction to J2ME programming, I felt the book was lacking in background and motivations.
Striking a balance between the two approaches I described might be a fool's errand. Therefore you would probably need one book from each category to really get involved in J2ME development.

Introduction to EVDO: Radio Channels, Logical Channels, and Network Operation

This book (if you can call it that) contains nothing useful to a communications professional (who else would want to know about ev-do?); the coverage and explanation is at the high school level at best, and I spotted at least one error in a two-minute glance. A high school student might be able to use the general description for a class project or paper, and even that is a stretch.

Nikon Creative Lighting System Digital Field Guide Review

Nikon Creative Lighting System Digital Field Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the most exciting innovations in photography occurred a couple of years ago without any fanfare. That was Nikon's introduction of the Creative Lighting System (CLS). This system allowed for the remote control of multiple speedlights (without any wires), including a balancing of their light outputs, from the camera. Even expensive studio lights don't provide this kind of control. Yet ever since its development, camera users have been confused by exactly how to use these capabilities. In part that was due to the spare nature of Nikon's instruction manual, including a lack of detailed explanation of the application of the system (although, to be fair, the manufacturer did provide a pamphlet with sample photographs that showed the deployment of the speedlights in each case.)
This book attempts to remove the confusion by including simplified explanations of the method of setting up the speedlights as well as a lengthy section on using CLS speedlights for a variety of different subjects. After a general introduction to the CLS system, the author describes the setup of the two main speedlights in the system, the SB-600 and SB-800. This is followed by a section on the basics of flash photography and then a discussion of CLS wireless flash basics. Thomas then talks about setting up a portrait studio with such things as umbrellas and backdrops, with an emphasis on portability. The applications section gives examples of everything from sports photography to product photography, with an explanation of the author's considerations in making sample shots. He finishes up with a simplified explanation of posing.
Thomas includes reference to the D70, D70S and D200 camera bodies in Commander or master mode. He also mentions the D50 and D2 series, which are compatible with CLS, although requiring a separate master unit. He doesn't deal with the newer D80 which has a commander mode or the D40 which is compatible with CLS.
Unfortunately, although he gives us a broad view of wireless multiple flash basics, there are not enough specifics. I would have liked to have seen more pictures using multiple flashes, with a diagram of the flash layouts, and the settings used on the master flash unit to achieve the effect. I would have liked to have seen examples of uses of multiple speedlights for other than portraiture, e.g., interiors (even Nikon's sample pamphlet does that) and maybe even some far out examples like nature photography (although I haven't encountered anyone whose figured that one out). And for a book dedicated to photography, there are few shots of the setup of the LCD screens on the SB-600 and SB-800, and none of the custom menu screens. And yet it was exactly with the setup that I (and many other users) encountered difficulty when first using the CLS system.
Even when he concentrates on portraits, the author assumes we know a lot. I think just the slightest discussion of the roles of main and fill lights would have been appropriate.
If you need something more than the instruction manual provides to use CLS the chapters on the SB-600 and -800, flash photography basics and wireless flash photography will help. But if you really expect to get creative with CLS, I'd recommend spending time with some better lighting book like "Exposure and Lighting For Digital Photographers Only" by Michael Meadhra and Charlotte K. Lowrie, even though they don't mention CLS. But keep in mind that anything you can do with strobes, other than turn out massive amounts of light, can be done more easily with Nikon CLS speedlights. (By the way, I am not an employee of Nikon, Inc. or in any way affiliated.)

802.11 Wireless Network Site Surveying and Installation Review

802.11 Wireless Network Site Surveying and Installation
Average Reviews:

This book assists in understanding the available systems, architectures, components, and tools of the trade in completing a design for an 802.11 WLAN. The book is aranged to match the chronological order of the final design, survey, and installation of a project. It begins with the prerequisites of a site survey, moves on to the survey and finally covers the installation process.
Of particular interest to me, because of the project I'm working on was Chapter 14 on Outdoor Bridge Deployments. Handling a small WLAN, such as across the room in a Starbucks or McDonalds is one thing. When you are going between buildings with distance, mountains and trees and periodically rain or snow in the way it is a different situation.
I consider this to be a beginning level book. It covers the basic considerations and details that I needed to know as I worked on my first WLAN. After this book come more specialized books on things like securing the network.

The Secret Wireless War Review

The Secret Wireless War
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a James Bond story, nor does it have an exciting fast moving plot; rather it is a detailed history about MI6 communications during WWII written by a man who was part of it. It offers a considerable collection of photos, descriptions and accounts of who, what, when and where MI6 communications operated in England and sites all over the world.
Much has been said about Bletchley Park (BP) and its important work breaking the Enigma codes, but this book tells a great deal of "the rest of the story." To do the work at BP that was so critical, thousands of people were collecting the needed raw communications intelligence and it is the story of these men and women that is told here.
Radio Amateurs (Ham Operators) in particular should find the information about British "VI" (Volunteer Interceptors) very interesting since at least 1500 civilian Radio Amateurs made up this intercept service during the war. In fact, it seems that a great number of the officers, operators and technicians involved in the MI6 communications and Royal Signals were experienced Ham Operators!
If you keep in mind that this is a collected history and not a novel, and you enjoy reading about wartime communications operations, then this will be a most interesting book for your library.
I enjoyed it as I learned about how MI6 conducted it communications during the war.

Possibly the most important UK wireless traffic in World War II was handled by a unit formed in 1938 by Brigadier Richard Gambier-Parry head of MI6 Section VIII - the communications division of SIS.This book tells of its formation and includes diary entries by one of the 'founding fathers' recording the secret meetings that took place, and the assembly of its talented staff. It reports the earlier days of the original SIS wireless 'Station X' based in Barnes in south west London, and the building of its second station in a bungalow in Surrey with the strange name of 'Funny Neuk' - which turned out to be owned by Admiral Sir Hugh Sinclair - 'C' - Chief of Secret Intelligence Services. The units wireless station at Bletchley Park is described and its replacement by the stations at nearby Whaddon Hall which then became the wartime headquarters of Section VIII.It documents the work of our agents in embassies abroad, and of those in German occupied territories; the story of Churchill's personal wireless operator, and there is the description by a German soldier of the Afrika Corps of his operating an Enigma machine at Rommel's headquarters in the desert. The curious story of 'Black Propaganda' is told and the units handling of the military ULTRA traffic out to commanders in the field.Personal tales by those who were part of this most secret of units abound in the book and it is an important record of people and events that-it is no exaggeration to say-helped to win the war.Whilst essential, the technical side of the tale has not been allowed to dominate the book which is profusely illustrated.

Game Theory for Wireless Engineers (Synthesis Lectures on Commnunications) Review

Game Theory for Wireless Engineers (Synthesis Lectures on Commnunications)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is intended to engineers interested in wireless ad-hoc networks. In this context, this book presents a very clear introduction to decision theory and game theory as many other books. However, the interesting point of this book is that it highlights the important issues in the field (such as power control and routing) and suggests topics for further research. I think that this book will be in the future a reference in this growing area.

Game theory is a field of applied mathematics that describes and analyzes interactive decision situations. It consists of a set of analytical tools that predict the outcome of complex interactions among rational entities, where rationality demands a strict adherence to a strategy based on perceived or measured results. In the early to mid-1990's, game theory was applied to networking problems including flow control, congestion control, routing and pricing of Internet services. More recently, there has been growing interest in adopting game-theoretic methods to model today's leading communications and networking issues, including power control and resource sharing in wireless and peer-to-peer networks. This work presents fundamental results in game theory and their application to wireless communications and networking. We discuss normal-form, repeated, and Markov games with examples selected from the literature. We also describe ways in which learning can be modeled in game theory, with direct applications to the emerging field of cognitive radio. Finally, we discuss challenges and limitations in the application of game theory to the analysis of wireless systems. We do not assume familiarity with game theory. We introduce major game theoretic models and discuss applications of game theory including medium access, routing, energy-efficient protocols, and others. We seek to provide the reader with a foundational understanding of the current research on game theory applied to wireless communications and networking.

Wired, Optical and Wireless Communication Review

I have this book and it showed up in my recommendations recently because a year ago I was trying to buy it for a course I was taking at DeVry University in Columbus Ohio. I always buy my textbooks online used if I can and I save a massive amount of money doing so. I saved $250 one session buying used online rather than buying from the university rip-off book store. The point I'm making is that this book was only available from the DeVry bookstore at the time that I needed it so my search at amazon was useless. I had to pay some ridiculous amount for the book since I couldn't find it online. My professor later told me what I already suspected and that was that this particular book for this particular course was actually thrown together by DeVry and printed up exclusively to be sold for this course and only available through their bookstores. The professor went on to explain how unprofessional these types of textbooks were and how they are thrown together and lack congruency and order from chapter to chapter. As the course went on we found this to be true. After the course was over I couldn't sell the book to anyone. The university bookstore would not buy it back and I was SOL.
So what I'm trying to say is that this book was designed cheaply, printed up cheaply and sold for a lot to students who had no other options. I still have the damn book today though I doubt I will ever reference it though that's not to say that there isn't some decent material in it. The reason I wrote this review is because someone is trying to sell this book for almost $600 and you'd have to be on crack to pay that. I wouldn't even pay $10 for it.
That is all. Good day!

802.11 Security Review

802.11 Security
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
GEEK ALERT!
Warning Will Robinson! This small book on 802.11b wireless security (167 pages not including the comprehensive index) is not for the faint of heart. To take full advantage of the copious amount of detail that Potter and Fleck provide, you need a good working knowledge of networking, and familiarity with either the Linux, FreeBSD, or OpenBSD operating systems.
802.11 Security is aimed at people who need to configure and administer secure 802.11b wireless (popularly named Airport or WiFi) networks. 802.11 Security is NOT targeted at the casual home computer user who merely wants to keep others from poaching their wireless connection. Those users are best served by Adam Engst's and Glenn Fleishman's Wireless Internet Starter Kit.
However, if you have any interest in comprehensive and detailed knowledge of how 802.11b security works from the network administrator's viewpoint, 802.11 Security is the book for you. Potter and Fleck have years of experience with Unix security issues, and have several papers on the subject to their credit.
After setting the stage with a good discussion of the many problems with wireless security, the authors outline some of the more common types of attacks on wireless networks. Why? Their point is that understanding the nature of the "Man-in-the-middle" attack (for example) is important for knowing how to prevent it. This point shows that 802.11 Security is more than just a "cookbook" manual. It provides the "why" as well as the "how."
The bulk of the book covers how to configure FreeBSD, Linux, and OpenBSD clients, gateways, and access points (base stations for us Apple types). Plenty of examples are provided. However, with no CD included to allow copy-and-paste, you'll need to enter everything manually if you want to follow the examples verbatim. In reality, the lack of a CD is not an issue, as the typical sysadmin is going to be working on their customized installation, and will need to tweak the code examples.
802.11 Security does have ten pages on Mac OSX station configuration, as well as a smaller section on Windows setup. For those adventurous readers, the Mac setup section has plenty of examples on how to configure OSX's built-in firewall for best wireless security. The relative paucity on client computer setup is one of the few drawbacks for an end-user reader, as the book focuses on administrator issues.
802.11 Security is a good read for the Unix sysadmin who is new to wireless networks, or for the aficionados who want to roll their own home wireless network security. Again, this is not a mass-market book. But if you're not the average home user, 802.11 Security is a worthwhile book.

Mention wireless networks, and the question of security will soon follow. It's not surprising that in spite of compelling business arguments for going wireless, many companies are holding back because of security concerns. But, while it's true that wireless networks create security issues that don't exist in wired networks, the issues are not insurmountable. 802.11 Security shows how you can plan for and successfully contend with security obstacles in your wireless deployment. This authoritative book not only explains the security issues, but shows you how to design and build a your own secure wireless network.

802.11 Security covers the entire process of building secure 802.11-based wireless networks, in particular, the 802.11b ("Wi-Fi") specification. The authors provide detailed coverage of security issues unique to wireless networking, such as Wireless Access Points (WAP), bandwidth stealing, and the problematic Wired Equivalent Privacy component of 802.11.You'll learn how to configure a wireless client and to set up a WAP using either Linux or Free BSD.You'll also find thorough information on controlling network access and encrypting client traffic.

Beginning with an introduction to 802.11b in general, the book gives you a broad basis in theory and practice of wireless security, dispelling some of the myths along the way.In doing so, they provide you with the technical grounding required to think about how the rest of the book applies to your specific needs and situations. Next, the book details the technical setup instructions needed for both the Linux and FreeBSD operating systems. Some of the topics covered include:

Station Security for Linux, FreeBSD, Open BSD, Mac OS X and Windows
Setting Up Access Point Security
Gateway Security, including building Gateways, firewall Rules, Auditing, etc.
Authentication and Encryption
FreeBSD IPsec client and gateway configuration
Linux IPsec client and gateway configuration
802.1x authentication
802.11 Security is a book whose time has come. If you are a network, security, or systems engineer, or anyone interested in deploying 802.11b-based systems, you'll want this book beside you every step of the way.

3G Evolution, Second Edition: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband Review

3G Evolution, Second Edition: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an implementation engineer, I needed to understand in detail each and every aspect of LTE specification. My job is to design the network stack of LTE (both base station and mobile station). When I started reading 3GPP LTE specification(36 series) 4 months ago, I found several sore concepts sticking out. Then I read the first edition of this book and found several concepts cleared. However the first edition had very few pages on LTE and focused more on WCDMA.
Then came this edition. I ordered this book from Amazon and it came within 2 weeks. This book makes understanding of LTE very easy. For instance I had several doubts in the RLC spec of 3gpp. Then I read the RLC content of this book and got all my doubts cleared.
The best thing about this book is that unlike other books, the contents of this book are not directly picked up from specification. It seems the authors of the book have a good grasp of what they are writing and have spent enough time to make it easy to read. Language is very succint. Each line makes sense, is relevant and helps increase understanding of LTE.
Overall this is probably the best book for LTE(and I have read several books). The book has been written in a fluid way and the flow of thought is connected. I have still not read the book completely, but I find myself going to the book again and again(in my free time or bedtime) just because it is a pleasant read.
Cons: At $120 I could not buy the book myself and had to ask my employer to purchase it. I wish they reasonably price it so that I can get a personal copy(and be able to underline several important things).

Linksys WRT54G Ultimate Hacking Review

Linksys WRT54G Ultimate Hacking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"For those who want to make the most out of their WRT54G you can learn how to port code and develop your own software for the OpenWRT operating system."
"Full coverage on embedded device development using the WRT54G and OpenWRT"
Unfortunately due to publication deadlines, much of the technical content of the book was dropped; it nolonger contains the chapters referenced in the above Amazon description, instead it focuses on giving brief reviews of the various firmwares available, along with hardware and software hacks. While it offers a good overview, the book falls short in technical depth and accuracy.
There are several places in the book where the information is either outdated or innacurate. Some examples -
OpenWrt should not be upgraded through the use of the "ipkg upgrade"; OpenWrt uses a filesystem overlay where the filesystem (squashfs) is readonly but appears writable by redirecting write access to another filesystem (jffs2). Attempting to upgrade will result in filesystem duplication; there are several warnings on the OpenWrt site regarding this.
The failsafe feaure is not new to OpenWrt's RC5 release; there has always been a failsafe proceeedure, but the instructions prior to the RC5 release were slightly different; failsafe was redesigned in RC5 to make it easier to access.
The example of blackholing advertisers through the use of dns using dnsmasq suggests rewriting the dnsmasq.conf; while the example does work, it creates a mess out of the configuration and involves many unnecessary steps. The same task could be acomplished much more easily by simply adding the hostnames to the /etc/hosts file.
The nvram-clean script does not actually reset the nvram configuration to defaults as described. The nvram-clean script only has a handful of known superfluous variables to remove; these are variables created by other firmwares that are nolonger required. It will not set any variables to their defaults; the defaults are device specific and setting them incorrectly would result in an unbootable device.
