Bought a Macbook, bought an iPod Touch, bought iPhone SDK Development book (in beta at the time) ... read, experimented, followed tips and used on-line examples from excellent web site associated with book ... result: "BeatTheSwine09" game now for sale in iTunes app store. Thank you Dudney and Adamson for providing the right stuff at the right time.
Clearly written, well-organized, comprehensive (includes chapters on debugging, performance tuning and marketing). The right mix to train and guide programmers through all stages of the development and deployment of an iPhone app.

Packing the power of desktop applications into a small mobile device, the iPhone SDK offers developers the ability to create dynamic, visually-appealing, and highly-capable mobile applications, using the same APIs and tools that Apple uses for its own applications. However, harnessing that power means learning new tools, new APIs, and even a whole new programming language.iPhone SDK Development is a Pragmatic guide to get you started developing applications for iPhone and iPod touch. With it, you'll get a complete understanding of the tools and techniques needed to succeed on the platform: Use the XCode IDE to manage your source code, images, sounds, database files, and other application resources, building your app and deploying it onto your own device for testing. Develop your user interface the visual, code-free way, with Interface Builder. Master the iPhone's unique user interface components, including tables, tab bars, navigation bars, and the multi-touch interface. Connect your iPhone to the outside world with networking, exploit the power of a relational database with SQLite, and rock out with first-class support for audio and video. Make use of the iPhone's unique mobile APIs, like geolocation and the motion-sensing accelerometer Use XCode's powerful performance and debugging tools to eliminate memory leaks, zombies, and other hazards. * Understand the process for packaging your application for end-user distribution through Apple's App Store. With explanations of the big picture and an eye to the little details that you'll need, iPhone SDK Development will help you succeed on today's most important mobile platform.

The Application of Programmable DSPs in Mobile Communications Review

The Application of Programmable DSPs in Mobile Communications

I highly recommend this book for the variety of DSP-related applications it covers in the field of wireless communications. The book is very well structured and discusses very well the implementations choices engineers are faced with. Being an RF engineer myself, I enjoyed learning several aspects of 'baseband' architecture challenges. The authors are real experts and the book is very readable.

iPhone Book, The (Covers iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS) (4th Edition) (iPhone Books)

I received an iPhone 4 for Christmas - it's my first iPhone. I had a Blackjack before that. I love technology, but I am by no means an expert. The iPhone is pretty easy to use, but the instructions that came with it seemed to assume that the owner would already know a lot about Apple products. Not me! I was completely new to this type of phone. My husband thoughtfully bought this book for me and I SO appreciate it. It is clear, concise, easy to understand, and full of helpful suggestions. I love the funny anecdotes at the beginning of each chapter. As the authors say, if you don't like them, skip over them! I highly recommend this book for anyone who is a new iPhone user.

If you're looking for a book that focuses on just the most important, most useful, and most fun stuff about your iPhone 4--you've found it. There are basically two types of iPhone books out there: (1) The "tell-me-all-about-it" kind, which includes in-depth discussions on everything from wireless network protocols to advanced compression codes. (2) Then there's this book, which instead is a "show-me-how-to-do-it" book that skips all the confusing techno-jargon and just tells you, in plain, simple English, exactly how to use the iPhone features you want to use most. The iPhone Book is from Scott Kelby, the award-winning author of the smash bestseller, The iPod Book, who takes that same highly acclaimed, casual, straight-to-thepoint concept and layout and brings it to learning Apple's amazing iPhone. Scott teams up once again with gadget guru and leading iPhone authority Terry White to put together a book that is an awful lot like the iPhone itself--simple to use and fun to learn. The book's layout is brilliant, with each page covering just one single topic, so finding the information you need is quick and easy, with a large full-color photo on each page so you can see exactly how it works.Scott and Terry added even more tips and tricks than the previous editions, and made it even easier by focusing on just the most useful and most requested iPhone 4 features, so you can start really using your iPhone today!

From GSM to LTE: An Introduction to Mobile Networks and Mobile Broadband Review

From GSM to LTE: An Introduction to Mobile Networks and Mobile Broadband
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the author indicates at the beginning of the book, "From GSM to LTE" provides a comprehensive overview of this evolution of modern wireless technologies, in a single concise but comprehensive format accessible to anyone with a prior background in communications theory. It is a plus that the author avoids the mathematics behind these standards, instead focusing on the "how and why" of all the technical components of GSM, GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/UMTS, and LTE, without going into the mind-numbing detail of the actual technical standards, which are nonetheless cited for those who wish to refer to them to actually implement these technologies. The book also has chapters on IEEE 802.16 (WiMax), IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n (WLAN), and Bluetooth, but I have not yet read them.

A new edition of Wiley's Communication Systems for the Mobile Information Society, from the same author

Wireless systems such as GSM, UMTS, LTE, WiMAX, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth offer possibilities to keep people connected while on the move. In this flood of technology, From GSM to LTE: An Introduction to Mobile Networks and Mobile Broadband enables readers to examine and understand each technology, and how to utilise several different systems for the best results. This book contains not only a technical description of the different wireless systems available today, but also explains the rationale behind the different mechanisms and implementations; not only the 'how' but also the 'why' is focused on. Thus the advantages and also limitations of each technology become apparent.

Offering a solid introduction to major global wireless standards and comparisons of the different wireless technologies and their applications, this new edition has been updated to provide the latest directions and activities in 3GPP standardization reaching up to Release 10, and importantly includes a new chapter on LTE. The new LTE chapter covers aspects such as Mobility Management and Power Optimization, Voice over LTE, and Air Interface and Radio Network.

iPhone SDK Programming: Developing Mobile Applications for Apple iPhone and iPod touch Review

iPhone SDK Programming: Developing Mobile Applications for Apple iPhone and iPod touch

I bought this book after I'd gone through Beginning iPhone Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK (Beginning from Novice to Professional), hoping to get another set of useful skills and tools to use, such as a reference for XML & RSS, SQLite, and a little more depth on the collections objects such as NSArrays, etc. that was only brushed over in the Beginning iPhone Development book. Overall, this book does fill in some of those gaps, but it really doesn't stand well as a standalone iPhone programming book. I'm glad this is my second choice, because if it were my first I'd probably be more confused!
If you're building your foundation, this book may be worth your while.
My largest complaint about this book is actually the way the code is written out on the page. Instead of clear, Courier-font code blocks, the editors just stuck code in Times Roman font. Anyone who's ever read their share of programming books knows this just complicates life by making it harder to differentiate code from content and better recognize typos, etc. I hope they revise this and publish another edition of the book - it's extremely noticeable. Also, I think this book was pushed to market without double-checking that the graphic examples are copyright compliant, because instead of icons in some of the screenshots the author substituted ugly character graphics that just looked dumb.
Overall, this is an okay programming book. There are some nuggets of good information, but as a beginner's book it's too complex, nor does it have enough depth to be a compendium for an advanced programmer.

The VoIP Handbook: The Complete Business Guide to Implementing Voice over Internet Protocol Review

The VoIP Handbook: The Complete Business Guide to Implementing Voice over Internet Protocol
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is hardly a book on the subject. Basically, the text of the book consists of bulleted lists of presentation points and some PowerPoint slides. I've included a typical screen of information so you can see how there is no text, just lists of bullets and slides.
In addition, the book includes the worlds most lazy method of creating a table of contents. Basically, the table of contents is a direct copy of the printed table of contents, page numbers and all. To add to the insult, there aren't even links on the table of contents to the individual chapters. I've posted a screenshot of the table of contents, too.
I must admit that I am basing this review on a downloaded sample. But after reading the sample, I can't see spending the money on buying the book. I just have to look elsewhere.

Professional Android 2 Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) Review

Professional Android 2 Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Android 2 is pretty new (as of March 2010) so having an Android 2 book on the market that is good quality was unexpected. I have not read all chapters, but here are my impressions so far:
Pro's
=====
- Author's style is neither dull or exciting, just to the point. Most explanations are clear and thorough.
- I definitely feel I have a good resource to complement the online Android docs. There have been a variety of topics I've tried to answer using Android docs (and Google searches) without much luck that this book covered clearly.
- There are a lot of good topics covered. Space is not wasted on reprinting information readily available online. Instead, author regularly refers reader to web links.
- And, finally, I appreciate the well-edited index.
Con's
=====
- The book is very weak in the illustration department. For example, instead of showing an image of a NinePatch bitmap, the author explains how a NinePatch should be constructed. This is chintzy and unforgivable for a book about a heavily visual technology.
- Occassionally, concepts are introduced without providing context. 'Kinda like when you walk into a meeting and the speakers clearly know their material but forget that 90% of the others in the room need to be brought up to speed before instructing.
- Some conspicuous omissions. For instance, no information on fonts.
