This book is a comprehensive look at those ideas. It points out that they can be used in contexts where GPS is weak or unavailable, especially inside buildings.
We also learn that ground based methods were historically the only means of finding location, until satellites were deployed.
Also, ground based methods can be more accurate than GPS. Through traditional mapping or surveying, if you have a fixed point on the ground, its location might be found, relative to some fiducial point, to greater accuracy than what GPS or even assisted GPS can furnish.
