(More customer reviews)In the book, the author traces the development of the Internet and wireless communication during the last 30 years. Hardly anyone on planet earth will be untouched by these rapid evolving technologies. He describes a fictitious family Alice, Bob, Charles and Diana who live some time in the future. The fictitious family have all their daily programs scheduled and evolved around the latest Wireless Internet Communication technology available then.
Why is wireless communication catching on so rapidly all of a sudden? After all, as the author rightly pointed out, ever since the beginning of time, human beings have been using wireless communication to communicate. They do this by shouting or using smoke signals. Hertz started the ball rolling when he discovered that electromagnetic waves could propagate not just over wires but even without wireless through the air. It is, however, the development of the Internet during this period which brought in all the killer applications in wireless communications that eventually provided the catalyst for the scramble.
The book describes varies aspects of the different Internet Protocols as well as how they work in conjunction with mobility management. With mobility, network security is becoming more and more important. This is especially so with widespread usage of wireless Internet and other wireless applications. The author devoted one whole chapter to this important topic and suggested solutions to the potential problems.
Next big event in Internet evolution is IPV6. The whole Internet community is waiting for its release as the present IPV4 is proving to be inadequate to handle the explosion of Internet users and the crying need for larger address space as well as other problems associated with IPV4.
The author gives equal treatment to all the above trends in Wireless Internet Communications. In the last chapter of the book, he took a peek into the exciting future including 4G.
